Acne Treatments

Acne is a common condition, affecting people of almost all ages. Acne is a chronic disease that requires an initial aggressive treatment and long-term maintenance. Acne can have a significant negative impact on quality of life, and can lead to scarring, so timely treatments are very important.

What causes Acne?

Acne is a multifactorial condition, caused by hormonal influence leading to excess sebum (oil) production, an increase in keratin formation (dead skin cells) that clogs the sebaceous glands, and the presence of bacteria in the skin (Cutibacterium acnes) that can thrive in clogged pores, further contributing to inflammation and infection.

Hormonal changes, such as those during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, can trigger or worsen acne. A family history of acne suggests a genetic predisposition to the condition. Some medications, like corticosteroids, or some types of contraception, can contribute to acne development. Using greasy or comedogenic (pore-clogging) skincare and hair products can also lead to breakouts. While the link between diet and acne is still being researched, some studies suggest that a diet high in sugar and dairy may contribute to acne in some individuals. Stress can influence hormone levels and potentially worsen acne symptoms.

When treating acne, we use an acne treatment program that targets one or more of these causative factors. During the initial consultation with Dr Marina, your skin will be assessed to determine the type and severity of acne. We then make an individual treatment plan that may involve a combination prescribed oral medications, prescription topical creams, skin care, and procedural treatments.

Acne Skincare

A good skincare regimen is the mainstay of most anti-acne treatment programs and will help maintain the benefits of other treatment modalities. Topical treatment for acne is available as washes, solutions, lotions, gels and creams. They may have single or multiple active ingredients.

We use medical-strength topical prescription therapies that are beneficial in most forms of acne.

Chemical Peels for acne

Chemical peels can be an effective treatment for acne and acne scars by exfoliating the skin, unclogging pores, and reducing inflammation. They work by removing the outer layers of skin, which can help to remove dead skin cells and excess oil that contribute to acne. Different types of chemical peels, such as salicylic acid peels and Jessner’s peels, are often used to treat acne.

Types of Chemical Peels for Acne: Salicylic Acid Peels, Glycolic Acid Peels, Lactic Acid Peels.

Chemical peels can help by removing the top layers of skin, clearing away dead skin cells and excess oil and debris that contribute to clogged pores and acne. Some chemical peels, like those containing salicylic acid, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce redness and swelling associated with acne. Chemical peels can help to smooth out rough skin texture and reduce the appearance of acne scars over time.

LED Light Therapy for acne

For acne treatment, LED light therapy is very beneficial, especially for inflammatory acne. Blue light is commonly used as it targets and destroys C-acne bacteria. It also works by reducing the activity of sebaceous glands, which produce oil that can clog pores and lead to acne.

LED therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that doesn’t damage the skin.

Frequency of LED Light Therapy: It’s generally recommended to space sessions 48-72 hours apart to allow the skin to effectively absorb the light energy.

For optimal results, aim for 2 sessions per week.

Consistency is key, so even if you can’t manage 2 sessions weekly, consistent use will still yield long-term results.

IPL Acne Treatments

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) acne treatment uses focused light to target and reduce acne. It works by reducing acne-causing bacteria, decreasing inflammation, and regulating oil production, leading to clearer and healthier-looking skin. IPL can also help reduce acne scarring and improve skin tone and texture.

Multiple sessions, usually spaced 3-4 weeks apart, are typically needed to achieve optimal results.
